LONDON PIANO CIRCLE

"Piano lovers who come together to share their passion and love of all things Piano.”

The London Piano Circle is a members’ organisation of proficient non-professional pianists, which organises small informal playing gatherings in some members’ homes, concerts and masterclasses.  It was founded in June 1994 by Andrew Cockburn and Elizabeth Gundrey. Subscriptions are £30 per year and members receive newsletters three times a year, in September, December and May, giving details of the Circle’s events and articles and information for members.

Philip Smith Masterclass
Saturday 06 October 2018

1.00pm - 4.00pm

Philip Smith is one of Britain’s most versatile pianists. He gives solo, chamber and concerto performances, and for 30 years he has performed regularly with Dame Evelyn Glennie. After their 1989 BBC Proms recital début they appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the Hollywood Bowl. They have played in the presence of royalty and heads of state in several countries and their critically acclaimed New York recital début took place at the Lincoln Center in 1998. They appeared again at the BBC Proms in 2015, and a short film about their collaboration was shown on BBC2 as part of ‘Proms Extra’.

As a soloist Philip has performed all of the 50 plus concertos in his repertoire and has played live and broadcast on 5 continents. In the UK he has appeared with the Hallé, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, London Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestras. He has performed the cycle of Beethoven concertos 5 times, and he also enjoyed playing Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” at Symphony Hall, Birmingham and at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Recordings include Liszt’s complete “Soirées de Vienne” for solo piano, several CDs with Dame Evelyn Glennie, and other chamber music. Philip appears at international Summer schools and festivals and he teaches in London. He enjoys duos with his pianist partner Noriko Ogawa in Japan and the UK, and they share a home with their cat, Sox.

Participation in concerts and masterclasses is open to London Piano Circle members. Non-members are welcome to attend as audience members (tickets £10). Non-members' tickets can be obtained by completing the LPC contact form.
