"The Red Violin" comes to London...
The
historic violin was crafted in 1720 by Antonio Stradivari, who
lovingly made his instruments in his small shop in Cremona, Italy
centuries ago, and remains the most famous violin maker of all
time. Not long after its creation, the instrument appeared to
vanish from the radar screen; no one knows where or to whom the
violin belonged for more than 200 years, spawning any number of
historians, writers, journalists, critics as well as Canadian
filmmaker, Francois Girard, to speculate on the violin's mysterious
history. Girard's imaginative speculations became the
narrative for his beloved film, "The Red Violin."

Celebrated American violin virtuoso Elizabeth
Pitcairn has earned a stunning reputation as one of
America’s most beloved soloists. Ms Pitcairn made her New
York debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in 2000 with the
New York String Orchestra and she appeared as soloist with the
Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of Music. She has
recently been named the Artistic Director of the Luzerne Chamber
Music Festival. She is a member of the distinguished faculty
at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, where she
currently resides. Her upcoming concert schedule and
recordings are featured on redviolin.net.

Pianist Louise Thomas is Director of Keyboard
Collaborative Arts at Chapman University in California. A
native of Ireland, Ms Thomas has performed extensively throughout
Europe, North America and Asia. After completing
undergraduate music studies at Trinity College Dublin, she was
offered a German Government scholarship to study piano performance
at the Hochschule in Hannover, Germany. An engaged
collaborative pianist, Dr. Thomas has made CD recordings in
Germany, at the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada as well as
appearing on numerous radio broadcasts. Her recordings are
available at iTunes.com. Louise has been invited onto the
faculty of summer programs in Tuscany, Italy and in
California. In 2011, she joined the faculty at the Luzerne
International Music Center summer program in upstate New York.

are giving a series of recitals to coincide with their mysterious
DeaD GooSe PROJECT. Both artists are well known for
imaginative programming and superlative interpretations of the
standard repertoire. The evening of "French Impressions" will
bring to light Gabriel Pierne's Sonata for Violin and Piano

Since her breakthrough performance at the Oistrakh Festival in
2008, Irmina Trynkos has been establishing herself
on the worldwide stage. Her recent season has been
characterised by a string of debuts in such venues as Wigmore Hall,
Queen Elizabeth Hall and Shanghai Concert Hall. The season’s
highlight was Irmina’s first appearance with the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Her
debut CD with the RPO includes premiere recordings of all Ignatz
Waghalter’s Violin Masterpieces (to be released on NAXOS in the
Autumn). Irmina is involved in premiering new compositions,
recently performing at Wigmore Hall Cyber Moment, a violin
and piano piece dedicated to her by Giorgi Latsabidze.

Irmina, based in the UK, is of Greek-Polish descent. She
made her debut when she was 8 years old. Leaving her native
Poland at an early age, she studied most recently with professors
Lydia Mordkovitch, Martin Mumelter and Nina Minko. Irmina was
the first person in Mozarteum’s history to be awarded a Bachelor
degree after only two years of study and later graduated from the

One of the most talented collaborative pianists of the young
generation Tomasz Lis is very much in demand as an
accompanist, soloist and chamber musician. Tomasz has
performed in many major concert halls in the UK and abroad
including Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, St. John’s Smith Square,
LSO St. Luke’s, and The Chopin Society. He has appeared at
the Cheltenham Music Festival, Chelsea Schubert Festival and London
Festival of American Music.

His 2010-2011 season was marked by a highly acclaimed Wigmore
Hall debut with baritone Jonathan Sells as a result of winning
the Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize. He has studied
French song with Malcolm Martineau on the Britten-Pears Young
Artist Programme. He was invited by Martin Katz to
participate in the Songfest Festival in Malibu, California.
In January 2008 he attended a winter residency at the Banff Centre
for Arts, Canada. The same year he performed at the summer
festival at the 75th Anniversary Gala with clarinettist Chen Halevi
and soprano Tracy Dahl, broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation.

Tomasz Lis has been a great advocate for championing
contemporary music by composers such as John Harbison, André
Previn, Peter Lieberson, Sven Ingo Koch, Libby Larsen, Peter
Childs, Maciej Zielinski and John Musto. He studied at the
Royal Academy of Music, London and at the Guildhall School of Music
where he received his Master of Arts degree.

LONDON OPEN HOUSE 2011 - ANOTHER SUCCESS

Saturday 17th
September 2011 1901 Arts Club again opened its doors for London
Open House - the UK's largest architecture festival.

We had such a strong response again this year (the third
consecutive year the Club has taken part in Open House) and though
it was tricky keeping track of all visitors we welcomed well over
180 people throughout the day for hourly tours highlighting the
history of the building, its various uses since its construction as
a schoolmaster's residence and its eventual extension and
refurbishment to become the 1901 Arts Club.

Visitors were also entertained by talented musicians with each
tour - solo pianists Yoon Chung and Andrew
Vernon, and baritone Alexander Learmonth with
Andrew Plant shared the performances between them,
bringing the 'arts' of the 1901 Arts Club to life.

If you weren't able to join us for Open House 2011 you don't
have to wait until next September; see our <a href=

for details of public events to come and enjoy our hidden gem at a
time that suits you.

enough money to enable exceptionally talented students to bridge
the difficult gap between full-time study and professional
status. Many Martin Music Scholarship Fund award winners have
gone on to extremely successful orchestral or solo careers with
names such as Natalie Clein, Nigel Kennedy, Freddy Kempf, Steven
Isserlis and Jennifer Pike forming part of the Fund's
alumni.

"Sara Mohr-Pietsch commented this morning (21/6/11 09:29)
on Breakfast that “ …I suppose the equivalent of
the Salon today, is the In Tune studio, hosted by Radio3’s very own
Sean Rafferty”. Well, if you are in London, there is
also a superb new “Salon” venue for chamber music in town, it is
the 1901 Arts Club. This small and uniquely intimate venue
has only been open to the public for a couple of years… and it is
already a great venue for great performances, and also for
rehearsals with its own concert Steinway grand.

This season I heard Benjamin Grosvenor and the
Steinberg Duo there. Both were astounding
performances.

The intimacy of the performances in a small “Salon” gives
the listener, and performers, a new insight and love of
chamber music. There is no stage, so there are no
boundaries between artists and their audience. Having
listened and loved chamber music all my life, and regularly go to
the Wigmore Hall (and regular Radio 3 listener), hearing the music
in such a small “Salon” for the first time was not like any other
concert. Suddenly, I could hear and feel the dynamics,
nuances and intimate rapport between the players so much more
clearly. And for solo performers the immediacy and clarity of
every note in such a space, means technically great skill is needed
to adjust in providing a very personal expression and performance.

After the concerts, often the performers mingle in the
lounge room and bar, over a glass of wine. The maximum
audience is about 45, so with such an informal setting it allows a
great opportunity for ideas to be shared and the performance to be
discussed.

Next season, the Steinberg Duo are making a return. I have
now booked for every concert in their series there! I really
cannot recommend the venue enough if you want to experience a
“Salon” for chamber music, and have a great evening too!

The 1901 Arts Club (www.1901artsclub.com)
is just tucked away near Waterloo and the South Bank."
