This recital spotlights enigmatic young female figures, shrouded in mystery and unresolved questions.
The programme opens and closes with Mignon, whose androgyny and obscure origins offer a fate different from the typical Romantic heroine. Like Mignon, Mélisande’s unknown past and fraught existence lead to tragedy. Lili Boulanger, another remarkable figure, was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome in 1913. Her song cycle Clairières dans le ciel evokes a dreamy, elusive love.
These women challenge patriarchal norms, shaped by murky pasts and untimely deaths, with Boulanger passing at 25, leaving a lasting legacy.
