Known for their thoughtful, passionate, and committed playing, the Gugg Piano Duo offers a concert that is both fresh and inviting - an evening well worth hearing!

Gugg Piano Duo

Gugg Piano Duo website
The Gugg Piano Duo is the winner of the International Competition Franz Schubert and Modern Music (FSMM) 2025 and regularly performs in important concert halls – most recently in the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, the Stefaniensaal of the Musikverein Graz and the Athenaeum in Bucharest, where they stood in for a duo evening with Martha Argerich and Cristina Marton-Argerich.

Tereza Gugg-Kalabova and Johannes Gugg met at the age of 14 on the course for highly gifted students at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.  At the suggestion of their professor at the time, they began making music together and won national and international prizes after just a few months.  Over the years they developed an intuitive way of playing together, supported by a shared sense of sound and a deep personal connection.

The Gugg Piano Duo has been awarded first prize numerous times.  In addition to the FSMM Competition, the duo has won first prize including the audience prize at the Suzana Szörenyi Duo Competition in Bucharest, the ArtePiano Competition in Castelnuovo di Farfa, the Franz Schubert Competition in Jeseník, the Music and Earth Competition in Sofia, the Vlastimil Lejsek Piano Duo Competition in Brno, the Martha Debelli Scholarship Competition of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the Austrian Music Competition Prima la musica and the International Summer Academy of the mdw.  Their other awards include 2nd prizes at the piano competition in Rome and the Duettissimo competition in Krakow, where they were also awarded the Mozart Prize, as well as a special prize at the ARD Competition in Munich.

Both completed their studies in piano solo performance with Ayami Ikeba and in instrumental pedagogy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with distinction.  They also graduated with distinction from the master’s program in piano duo performance in the class of the Silver-Garburg Duo.

They have performed with orchestras such as the Krakow Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Conservatory in Brno, the Webern Chamber Philharmonic and the Munich Chamber Orchestra.  Their performance of Carl Czerny's piano concerto for four hands with the Webern Chamber Philharmonic was broadcast on ORF as part of a charity concert for Licht ins Dunkel.  The duo has also appeared on television and radio programs in Austria (Ö1), Germany (ARD), Poland (Radio Krakow), the Czech Republic (Radio Vltava) and the Netherlands (NPO).

Concert invitations have taken the duo to Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Austria, Italy, Spain, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Brazil.  In the coming season, they will also be performing in France and Estonia for the first time, as well as at the Musikverein Graz, the Styriarte and the Ljubljana Festival, among others.

For the years 2025 and 2026, the duo was selected by the Austrian Foreign Ministry as ambassadors of Austrian culture as part of the NASOM funding program.
