Singer-songwriter Laura Lantano believes that improvisation is an important approach to life and that music should be created in the same way.  A classic pop artist with a jazz twist, Laura Lantano has spent all her life surrounded by music, and the spontaneity of sitting at the piano, being carefree with chords, melodies and words, is the best path to tread to find the story of a song.

Immersed in music since childhood, Lantano began learning piano at the age of 4.  Her dedication to the instrument saw her progress to classical pieces by the likes of Bach and Beethoven in her teens, whilst at 8 years old she wrote her first song.  It was a brief encounter with the saxophone that introduced her to the world of jazz, and she spent her teenage years writing songs, inspired by singers on the radio such as Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey.

As Laura’s musical taste developed, she explored the recordings of jazz standards from Jazz singers such as Carmen McCrae and Betty Carter.  Songwriters such as Lennon and McCartney, Carole King, and Burt Bacharach have all left a lasting impression on Laura Lantano over the years.

It was Laura’s first experience at a recording studio when she was 14 that really sparked a desire to write music, after a friend was so impressed by Lantano’s compositions that they booked her into a recording session at Mcasso Music in London.  The song was even entered into the Eurovision competition.

After several years teaching music in classrooms, Laura decided to pursue further studies at Trinity College of Music, where she studied Jazz performance and was awarded the Archers Scholarship, training with vocalists such as Nia Lynn, Brigitte Beraha and Anita Wardell.  During the first coronavirus lockdown, which gave her the time to reflect on her music career, Laura decided to enrol on a MA Songwriting at Bath Spa, where she gained a distinction, enabling her to study with Julianne Regan and Davey Ray Moor.

While working as a piano teacher in her 20s, Laura taught British concert pianist, Nicholas McCarthy.  She also gained behind-the scenes experience, working as a studio assistant at Sony Music Studios during her undergraduate degree in Music and Music Technology, where she had the opportunity to work with music producers Bacon & Quarmby, singing backing vocals for MOBO Unsigned Artist award winner J’Nay.

Through her study at Trinity College of Music, Laura Lantano began performing in famous Jazz venues including Ronnie Scott's, The Pheasantry and The Vortex, and travelled to Italy, Slovenia and the Philippines to perform.  She has performed with well-known musicians of the London Jazz scene, including John Crawford, Sam Crowe and Martin Speake.

2023 is a big year for Laura Lantano, as she is set to release her debut album ‘Returning to Myself’, a collection of songs inspired by love, heartache, living in the past and starting again.  Her rich, soothing vocals are accompanied by pianist Sam Leak, and tenor saxophonist Duncan Eagles, for intimate, acoustic performances that highlight Lantano’s soulful voice and her ability to write songs of a timeless quality.
