Alice Neary
Alice enjoys a varied performing career as a chamber musician, soloist and principal cellist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW). Familiar to listeners of BBC Radio 3, her festival performances include BBC Proms chamber series, Marlboro (USA), Bath International, Santa Fe (USA) and Lofoten (Oslo, Norway). Recent concerto performances include Honegger and Cheryl Frances-Hoade Concertos with BBC NOW.
Alice is a former member of the Gould Piano Trio – her career highlights include the complete piano trios of Beethoven, Schubert and Dvorak at the Wigmore Hall, the commissioning of new works from Sir James MacMillan and Mark Simpson, regular tours of USA and over 25 CD releases.
Alice has appeared as guest cellist with numerous groups including the Nash Ensemble, Ensemble 360 and the Endellion, Elias, Bingham and Heath String Quartets. She collaborates with pianists Viv McLean, Benjamin Frith, Robin Green and Daniel Tong. Regular visits to International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove, Marlboro Festival USA and Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival provide ongoing inspiration. In January 2022, she took part in a USA tour with Marlboro Music Festival musicians, (including performances at Carnegie Hall and Philadelphia Chamber Music Society). Future plans include Don Quixote with BBC NOW in June 2023.
Alice studied with Ralph Kirshbaum at the RNCM and, as a Fulbright scholar, with Timothy Eddy at Stonybrook, USA. As a teacher, she has been a tutor in cello at the RNCM and Royal College of Music in London. She is based in her home town of Cardiff and, in 2015 was awarded a Fellowship at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Alice is a mentor for ChamberStudio, an organisation that provides the highest level of coaching and support to emerging professional chamber musicians. She and her husband, David Adams, founded the Penarth Chamber Music Festival in 2014. Alice plays a cello by Alessandro Gagliano of 1710.

Viv McLean
Described by Le Monde as "possessing the genius one finds in those who know how to forget themselves", since winning First Prize at the Maria Canals Piano Competition in Barcelona, Viv McLean has performed in all the major UK venues as well as throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA. His concerto work includes appearances with the RPO, Philharmonia, LPO, Hallé, English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva, Orchestra of the Swan, Orchestra of St John’s, Northern Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Concert Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra under such conductors as Daniel Harding, John Wilson, Wayne Marshall, John Lubbock, Philip Hesketh, Christopher Warren-Green, Owain Arwel Hughes, Carl Davis, Rebecca Miller, Chloé van Soeterstède and Marvin Hamlisch.
Viv frequently plays with leading chamber groups such as the Ysaÿe String Quartet, Sacconi String Quartet, members of the Elias, Allegri, Carducci and Tippett String Quartets, Leonore Piano Trio, Ensemble 360 and the Leopold String Trio. He has collaborated with soloists including Natalie Clein, Alice Neary, Marianne Thorsen, Daniel Hope, Adrian Brendel, Lawrence Power, Mary Bevan, David Le Page and Guy Johnston. He has performed at numerous UK festivals including Cheltenham International, Buxton, Music in the Round, Glossop and Harrogate International. Abroad, he has performed at the International Beethoven Festival, Mecklenburg Festival and Kultur Kreis Festival in Germany, the Festival International de Musique Classique d’Aigues-Mortes, Melle Festival and Festival de Saintes in France, the Vinterfestspill i Bergstaden in Norway, and the Musik vid Kattegatt Festival in Sweden.
Viv studied with Ruth Nye and, after attending Chetham’s School of Music, went on to study at Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne. Whilst at the Academy, he won the piano prize at the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, was selected as one of the winners of the National Federation of Music Societies Young Artists Competition, and made his Wigmore Hall debut through winning the Royal Academy of Music Wigmore Award.
