Waka Hasegawa is a pianist known for her expressive artistry and thoughtful programming, often championing lesser-known classical works through a richly personal and cross-cultural lens. As one half of the internationally acclaimed duo Piano 4 Hands with Joseph Tong, she has performed widely across the UK, Europe, America, and Japan, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, the BBC World Service, and WFMT Radio Chicago.
Her solo playing has been praised for its clarity, colour, and insight, notably in repertoire ranging from 20th-century French works to contemporary British music. Her album Undiscovered Piano Works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor(Metropolis/Naxos) has received international recognition for shedding new light on the composer’s piano writing with sensitivity and conviction.
Waka has collaborated with musicians from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and worked closely with composers including Dai Fujikura, Nicola LeFanu, John McCabe, and Edwin Roxburgh.
She is also the founder and Director of the Dulwich Music Academy, where she continues to mentor and inspire young musicians.
