Debussy and Ravel are known for their shared gifts for musical imagery and for being labelled early in their careers as Impressionists - a term very much associated with the visual arts. In this recital, the inquisitive young British pianist, Guy Murgatroyd, turns the lens on these composers' subtle musical differences while also celebrating the depth of their vivid musical landscapes.
Featuring both sets of Debussy’s Images and Ravel’s fiendish Gaspard de la nuit, this unmissable recital promises to be a feast for the senses.

Praised for his searching virtuosity and inquisitive approach to programming British pianist Guy Murgatroyd excels in many musical specialties beyond his main work as a classical piano soloist including a longstanding passion for Art Song and Lieder as well as working as a répétiteur, coach and musical director.
Commencing musical studies at the age of eleven Guy then attained a place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on a scholarship studying under Victor Sangiorgio and Pascal Nemirowski. During this time he won every major Conservatoire award for piano accompaniment as well as numerous academic tributes.
Further Postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of music in London under Michael Dussek resulted in numerous additional awards for performances as a collaborative pianist including a Master of Arts and DipRAM. Since completing his Masters, Guy has studied privately under the mentorship of renowned Russian-Finnish soprano, pianist and pedagogue, Nina Rautio; one of Pavarotti's much revered stage collaborators.
Guy has performed in solo master classes for Peter Donohoe, Leslie Howard, Paul Berkowitz, Martin Jones, Julian Jacobson, Ian Jones and vocal repertoire masterclasses for Helmut Deutsch, Bengt Forsberg, Malcolm Martineau, Dame Anne Murray, Sir Thomas Allen, Brindley Sherratt, Susan Bullock CBE, Wolfgang Holzmair, Roderick Williams, Elly Ameling and Thomas Quasthoff.
Since completing formal studies solo performances have taken him to the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Holywell music room in Oxford. Additionally he has partnered with many different singers for Art Song and operatic repertoire including several appearances at the Oxford International Song Festival. Guy is a founding member of several chamber music groups including a duo collaboration with Canadian cellist Daryl Giuliano.
In addition to his soloist and collaborative work, Guy is also a freelance répétiteur, arranger, composer and musical director as well as the performance coach and accompanist in the music department at the Sixth Form College Farnborough in Hampshire.
He has also worked extensively for the South-East branch of Live Music Now delivering interactive community-based performances for disadvantaged children and the elderly.
Guy is the musical director of independent UK opera company Rogue Opera. Over the five years since joining the company, he has arranged, rehearsed and musically directed a new production every season in close collaboration with company director, the award winning entrepreneur and mezzo soprano, Bronwen Stephens-Harding.
As well as full length productions for clients including, Fullers and Brasserie Blanc, Rogue Opera has created a large number of bespoke corporate and outreach events in venues ranging from The Garsington Opera stage to Clapham Grand, as well as an epic livestream series throughout the 2020 pandemic. This series sought to bring an awareness of opera to a wider online audience as well as helping to generate work for over fifty freelance singers at a time when most theatres were closed.
This season sees Guy take his latest solo project, Images de la nuit, an exploration of imagery in the music of Debussy and Ravel, to various venues across London and the South of England.
