Welcome to the third in a new series of chamber concerts in 2025 at the 1901 Arts Club, performed by musicians from London and beyond and hosted by bassoonist Miles Chapman.
This concert is flanked by 2 French chamber works. The first piece is a trio d’anches by Romanian-born French composer and conductor, Marius Constant. Although he composed numerous ballet scores, several concertos, and a remarkable orchestral work - 24 Préludes pour Orchestre, which was premiered under the baton of Leonard Bernstein - he is best known for the iconic guitar theme from the American television series The Twilight Zone. The last work of the evening is Darius Milhaud’s La Cheminée du roi René, an adaptation of the music that the composer wrote for Raymond Bernard's 1939 film Cavalcade d'amour. In the middle we will hear a work for solo viola by Wigmore Hall's Composer-in-Residence, Caroline Shaw. ‘In manus tuas’ is based on a 16th century motet by Thomas Tallis. And Aubade, by Dinu Lipatti, one of the greatest pianists of the first half of the 20th century who died from effects related to Hodgkin's disease at the tender age of 33. Aubade, his last major composition before he died, was written in 1949. It was written for the birthday of Paul Sacher, a great musician and supporter of new music at that time, and one of Lipatti’s closest friends. Our Waterloo-based music salon comes with cosy seating and an amply stocked bar to quench your thirst during the interval and to join the artists after the performance. So come along, grab a glass of wine, kick back your heels and melt into some beautiful music. |
